INDIANAPOLIS TO CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- You can learn a lot about a fella by the way he deals with stress.

Me? I suck down a smoke -- and then cut and run. Not Ron Artest. No, when Ron's number is called, the Sacramento Kings forward goes to the hole. Literally.

"It happens whenever I get nervous," Artest admits.

This is a peculiar yet telling statement. See, Artest didn't feel this way before walking the aisle and most certainly not before NBA contests, playing in the All-Star Game or even before Game 6 of Round 1 in the Western Conference playoffs last season. No, Artest can roll with all that.

But this is a different tale altogether. Sitting in a fast-moving stretch H2 for a three-hour Indy-to-Champaign trek, flanked by eight of his closest Queensbridge Projects pals, Artest is forecasting a nervous night because in several hours he'll open for Ludacris at a rap concert at the University of Illinois -- where many people will be holding drinks and other potentially airborne projectiles.

Guy walks into a bar, belts out an aria ...

So, how does a young, unknown tenor from Minnesota get noticed in Montreal? Simple. He saunters into a crowded bar at happy hour and, without warning, serenades the tipplers with a bravura rendering of Nessun Dorma - a cappella, of course.

As all you opera buffs are aware, Nessun Dorma, the famed aria from Puccini's Turandot, roughly translates as "No One Shall Sleep." And I can report that no one dozed off while Ryan Wotherspoon belted Pavarotti's signature tune at the tony Bistro on the Avenue.

His audience, comprising some cynical boulevardiers as well as the more righteous, was genuinely moved by the impromptu performance. Women wept. Men came close. Glasses were on the verge of shattering as Wotherspoon hit the high notes.

Minis to the Max at NY Fashion Week

Outside Miller's traditional comfort zone of cute cocktail dresses were a black, zip-front catsuit and draped silk dresses in chain-mail or fleur-de-lis prints.

LACOSTE

Lacoste's golf- and tennis-enthusiast fans will have new options for the slopes.

The French brand made its case on a gigantic bear rug Saturday, opening with cozy jumpsuits in sweatshirt material for women and chunky turtleneck sweaters for men.

Next came some more fashion-forward looks _ shorts with tights, and flat-weave sweaters with geometric patterns.

There were plenty of menswear influences in the women's styles, including skinny ties and traditional blazers with country club-style emblems. There also were gray flannel pants in every possible silhouette _ gaucho pants, wide-leg palazzo pants, slim trousers and capris.

Roberts off and running for Orioles in 7-5 victory over Florida

JUPITER, Fla.: Baltimore Orioles leadoff batter Brian Roberts was off and running Friday, to the annoyance of Florida Marlins pitcher Mark Hendrickson.

Roberts started the Orioles' 7-5 victory with a leadoff double in the first inning against Hendrickson and promptly stole third. He stole third again in the third inning against Rick VandenHurk.

On Thursday against Florida, Roberts stole two bases in the first inning. Hendrickson took exception to the aggressiveness so early in spring training.

"I wanted to yell at him, go, 'What are you doing? Getting your legs in shape?'" Hendrickson said. "He steals a lot. That's part of his game, so more power to him, but it's one of those things."

Roberts shrugged off Hendrickson's reaction.

TheStar.com | entertainment | MuchMusic VJ Sarah Taylor on recovery ...

Valentine's Day holds special meaning for Sarah Taylor this year, and not just because the 26-year-old MuchMusic VJ has fallen in love for the first time ("I know, disgusting," she groans).

Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of the fall in a Las Vegas hotel room that left a two-centimetre hole in Taylor's skull, affecting her ability to speak.

The Hamilton native was going to survive, friends and relatives were told as they gathered at Valley Hospital Medical Center where she lay in an induced coma for 10 days following emergency brain surgery. But they were warned she might require constant care and be unable to read or write again.

"Miraculous" is how members of her inner circle describe her recovery; life-changing is how she characterizes the catastrophe's impact.

India Gujarat rioters get life for rape, murders

A special court which heard the case in Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra state, found 13 men guilty of a variety of crimes from rape and gang rape to murder and destruction or falsification of evidence. One accused has since died.

'The court handed life sentence to 11 of the accused and three years for the policeman,' defence counsel Rajendra Shirodkar told Reuters.

'We will appeal against the verdicts within a fortnight.'

Human rights groups say about 2,500 people were hacked, beaten or burned to death in the riots that started after 59 Hindu activists burned to death inside a train in Gujarat.

Hindu groups blamed a Muslim mob for the train fire, but a subsequent inquiry panel said it was an accident.

Thousands of cases were filed by Muslim victims but a couple of them came to be seen as key to winning justice for hundreds of women who have sexual assault cases pending from the riots.
