| Has ‘R’ word come to Bulloch?
Empty homes and for-sale signs clutter neighborhoods around the country. You’ve lost your job or know someone who has. Your paycheck and nest egg are taking a hit. Could the country be in recession? Sixty-one percent of the public believes the economy is now suffering through its first recession since 2001, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll. The fallout from a depressed housing market and a credit crunch nearly caused the economy to stall in the final three months of last year. Some experts, like the majority of people questioned in the poll, say the economy actually may be shrinking now. The worry is that consumers and businesses will hunker down further and pull back spending, sending the economy into a tailspin. Has this actually happened in Bulloch County? Have residents purposefully reigned in their discretionary spending? Are business owners feeling the "pinch?" Depending on who you ask, you are going to get a different answer.
Late UCF Women's Basketball Rally Falls Just Short at UAB
UAB connected on 11 three-pointers Thursday and UCF's valiant late-game rally came up just short, as the Knights dropped a 68-63 decision to the Blazers in Bartow Arena. The Knights (9-19, 2-13 Conference USA), who trailed 60-46 with 4:43 remaining, put together a 17-6 to come within three points, 66-63, with 33 ticks left on the clock after a three-pointer by freshman guard Marshay White (Rochester, N.Y.). After freshman guard D'Nay Daniels (Atlanta) missed a three-pointer, UCF was forced to foul and the Blazers' (14-14, 10-5 C-USA) Christon Ingram connected on both free throws to make the final margin. "We had a good opportunity to win this game tonight," UCF head coach Joi Williams said. "I am really proud of the way our team fought back. They showed great effort in the second half and that is the way we are going to play from this point forward.
Kotsay won’t play in Andruw’s shadow
Safe, not so much. Kotsay's a gamble. If he can play 150 games, it pays off. If he's closer to the career-low 56 he played last year, the Braves have a problem. (Kotsay wasn't injured Thursday. He reported early and played in Wednesday's exhibition against Georgia. Long bus rides to Vero Beach tend to be bad for backs, so Cox rested him.) Kotsay never had a back issue until 2003, when he crashed into the wall at Colorado while playing for San Diego, putting him on the disabled list with a sprain. The following year with the A's, he played in 148 games and batted a career-high .314. But the back worsened the next two seasons. In 2006, he missed 25 of Oakland's final 51 games. He added yoga stretches to his conditioning program. But the herniated disc in his back wasn't receptive.
My $11,000 hot java love machine
The kind who don't blink when a cup of joe hits $15 and you need an $11,000 machine to make it. While huge companies such as McDonald's and Starbucks duke it out to steal the pedestrian coffee crowd from the local doughnut shop, these baristas and their acolytes are uncovering seriously scientific ways to coax the clearest flavours out of any given coffee bean. Like the North American shift from big cabernets and oaked chardonnays to more elegant pinot noirs and rieslings, the coffee lover's palate is maturing. Pointing to the guts of his state-of-the-art Synesso espresso machine, Mr. Robertson, formerly an electrical engineer, explains that the computer controls the temperature of each head. "I can adjust the temperature to within 0.1 degree Fahrenheit - and we can use a PID [digital thermostat] algorithm to change the temperature profile and the pressure time curve," he says.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 2
PARIS, Feb. 2 U.S. actress Pamela Anderson, whose curves earned her international fame on the TV series "Baywatch," is to appear nude in a Paris cabaret stage show. The 40-year-old actress, whose role on the TV series "Home Improvement" helped ignite her career, will bare all during a nude review at the Paris cabaret house Crazy Horse, OK! Magazine reported Friday. The risque show, which reportedly will place the actress on a Harley Davidson motorcycle as part of a special strip tease, will take place this month. Anderson's performance will not mark her first time going nude, as the actress has appeared unclothed in Playboy magazine multiple times. WOLVERINE, G.I. JOE, THE DARK KNIGHT: FEBRUARY 20TH COMIC REEL WRAP
Actress Sienna Miller told the Sunday Mirror that she's learning how to drive and beefing up for her role in the toy adaptation. "I'll be in LA for the next few months filming the movie 'G.I. Joe', and it's like a ghost town if you can't drive," said Miller. "I've started taking boxing lessons, and I've also had to learn how to fire guns with live ammunition. I'm a baddie, running around kicking everyone while wearing tight, thigh-high boots. I'm getting muscles everywhere." Winehouse to fight cannabis conviction
The singer-songwriter, who was nominated for six Grammy awards earlier this month, was arrested with her husband Blake Fielder-Civil on October 18 at the five-star Radisson SAS Hotel. The couple and another man were held in cells overnight but were released after admitting possessing 1/4 ounce (7g) of the drug. Bergen police spokeswoman Liv Karlsen said: "I can confirm that she must appear in court. "If one appeals a conviction, it's the rule that one has to appear in person, so this is not surprising." Winehouse has claimed she did not know what she had put her signature to and had been tricked. Bergen Police said she was given full translation assistance. Fielder-Civil, 25, is in jail awaiting trial for perverting the course of justice.

Movie Talk
A great documentary about a real-life couple caught up in a weird, strange, shocking relationship. It's one of those movies you have to see to believe. No disrespect to J-Hood, but he is on here in disproportion to his name in the game. You can say what you want about 50 Cent and the Lil Wayne rumors but the are all over the place for good reason. Nevertheless, I heard a rumor that Hood was robbed and made to strip his gear all the way down to his boxers this weekend in Yonkers. Now, here is where it gets weird. I heard “they" put the whole ordeal on tape. I'm hearing they are threatening to put it on the net to embarrass the young homey. No word on who did this, but there are a few guys I think have motive.
