Morgan Cowles, 1968-2008: Avid skier brings together friends even ...

Morgan Cowles' father never grasped how many friends his son had made in 39 years until he saw the Facebook group created in Morgan's memory.

The page overflowed with stories of childhood pranks, hiking trips, Morgan's addiction to the weekend New York Times and his mean recipe for Manhattans.

Most striking to the grieving father was how many times the group's 130 members remembered Morgan helping them through a tough time.

"When he was 3 years old, I found myself listening to Morgan's judgment on things," said Richard Cowles, his father. "He had a better sense of human nature than I had."

Cowles, a longtime Seattle resident, died in an avalanche in Sequoia National Park in California on Jan. 28. He and friend Jason Gardner, who survived, were skiing.

Our idea doesn't work! Let's do it! According to Tamar Jacoby, the recent arrest of 1,300 suspected illegal workers at six Swift & Co. meat processing plants demonstrates the need for 'comprehensive immigration reform.' I don't understand:

1) "Comprehensive" reform is supposed to be a deal in which amnesty for current illegals (and a guest worker program) is coupled with a tougher workplace enforcement program to block future illegals. Sounds good, but the last such "comprehensive" reform--the1986 amnesty--failed miserably when its workplace enforcement program turned out to be ineffective at stopping employers from hiring illegals. The idea behind the current Bush proposal is that this time workplace enforcement will work.

Led Zeppelin Roars Back in Reunion Show

LONDON (Dec. 11) - After that performance, Led Zeppelin really must go on tour. The reunited rock 'n' roll legends were superb Monday in their first full concert in nearly three decades, mixing in classics like "Stairway to Heaven" and "Black Dog" with the thumping "Kashmir" and the hard-rocking "Dazed and Confused." .

Kylie Minogue makes comeback

One would think the pressure of making a rebound album is daunting for most performers – especially those who have undergone major health setbacks –but for Minogue, its business as usual.

Admitting her whole career has been a "series of major and minor comebacks," she gives off an incredible confidence when talking about the ups and downs of her life in pop via phone from her Londonhome.

"I used to say that being a diva, you had to have tragedy in your life and all I've ever had was tragic hairdos and outfits. Obviously, I have to modify that statement now. A diva really needs to learn how to cope, too. To make it through some of the attacks and problems that I have had over the years ..."

She trails off before continuing, listing particular moments during her post-"Locomotion," pre-"Can't Get You Out of my Head" time in hitsville.

Surf's not all that's up

But after a 45-minute drive and close brush with death (courtesy of an another Australian behind the wheel who was still adjusting to driving on the other side of the road), I think I'm in heaven.

Waikele is an outdoor outlet shopping village in Waipahu, featuring American labels such as Michael Kors, Polo Ralph Lauren and Coach at reasonable prices.

The next day, I give the credit card a well-deserved rest and head to Oahu's eastern coast for kayaking.

The conditions are rough and there is a downpour halfway through our paddle to a small cove off the coast, but the skies clear again just as quickly once we reach dry land and the spectacular surroundings are well worth the effort.

Our excellent Twogood Kayaks guide Gabriel points out seabirds and turtles, before we head back to Kailua Beach for snorkelling and sunbathing.

How much do families spend?

Most of my expenditure goes out in mortgage, council, bills, transport, food and private healthcare.

When we are short of money, the first thing that we try to stop spending on is going out to eat or drink, buying books DVD's etc. If we are still short of money, then we try to spend less on our weekly food shopping, and only buy new clothes when we really need to.

Over the years we have changed our spending habits according to what income we have had. For about four years we lived on one income, after our children were born. Money was very tight, so very little was left over after paying the bills for any anything else. Going out and buying new clothes was a thing of the past!

NANCY VAUGHAN: Prudent judgments take time

I have been asked to consider new ways to do business and I have been asking others to do the same. All of this activity involves the delivery of human services and much of it involves public policy. Meanwhile, seemingly endless political messages permeate daily life and frequently touch on issues involving public policy.

Could Be Kenny Rogers' Last Year

Detroit Tigers pitching coach Chuck Hernandez stepped between Rogers and the bullpen catcher, ending the session on Sunday.

"Get out of here!" Hernandez shouted.

Rogers reluctantly walked away, with sweat on his brow and grass stains on his knees.

"I just keep going until Chuck stops me," Rogers said with a smile.

Rogers has spent three-plus years of his life at spring training -- a fact he said was "scary," -- and still enjoys rolling around on the infield like a kid during pitchers' fielding practice.

In fact, Rogers said that's his favorite part.

"I love PFP (pitcher's fielding practice)," he said. "Why, I don't know. After I'm done, I don't enjoy the feeling."

The 43-year-old Rogers is the third-oldest player under contract in the majors, trailing Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer by two years and Arizona's Randy Johnson by one.
