Still, he added, "The church has not changed its stand on the use of condoms, and we will not support wholesale use of condoms." In the past, a number of church denominations in Malawi have condemned the use of condoms for encouraging, as they believe, promiscuity and pre-marital sex among young people. Instead of condoms, the churches have called for sexual abstinence before marriage. Bishop Bvumbwe was speaking at a meeting to review an MCC manual on HIV and AIDS. He also said that clergy should fight any harmful cultural practices that might increase the spread of the virus. Bvumbwe said, however, that the process of uprooting harmful cultural practices should not affect Malawi's national traditions. "We should preserve our Malawian identity and not become westernised," he cautioned.
Bethel men’s tennis team falls in opener
LINCOLN, Neb. — The Bethel College men’s tennis team opened the 2008 spring season with a pair of losses Sunday in Nebraska. The Threshers lost to NCAA Division III Grinnell College of Iowa 8-1. The second doubles team of Sam Gaddert and Nathan Dick provided Bethel’s sole win of the match. The Threshers later lost to host Nebraska Wesleyan 9-0. "This was a tough couple of matches to open with," Bethel coach Lonnie Isaac said. "I thought our players competed well and we had several chances to win more matches but just came up short. Both these teams were solid to begin with and you combine that with us being able to only have about five practices so far because of the weather and we just weren’t as prepared as we should have been. Our non-conference schedule is a real challenge this year.
Touchdown? Nah... splashdown!
A couple of years ago, one of the local media outlets mentioned us during a series on the most bizarre sports around, lumping us in with things like the table-top hockey league." Sean Ennis, an executive member of the Manitoba Underwater Council, underwater football's governing body, agrees that most people look at him like he's gone off the deep end when he tells them how he spends his Friday nights. "Even the lifeguards shake their heads at us. But you know what? People who try it once come out of the water saying, 'It's crazy, it's nuts... when can I play again?'" The term "underwater football" is somewhat of a misnomer. The game is actually closer to rugby. That is, if rugby were played with snorkels, fins and Speedos. To begin, teams of five line up at opposite ends of the pool.
