| Evaluating Self-Improvement Gurus
There are weird coincidences and synchronicities, a phenomenon first brought to my attention in the following dialogue from the 1984 cult classic Repo Man. Miller: A lot o' people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch o' unconnected incidents 'n things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice o' coincidence that lays on top o' everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: Suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, "plate," or "shrimp," or "plate o' shrimp" out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconsciousness. Otto: You eat a lot of acid, Miller, back in the hippie days? Miller: I'll give you another instance: You know how everybody's into weirdness right now? The first plate o' shrimp incident happens on January 3.
Online FarmersOnly matchmaking service lets singles in rural America ...
CARLISLE, Pa. -- Sonya Rinker was looking for a guy: someone who was kind, respectful and had a special place in his heart ... for John Deere tractors. She didn't know that somewhere along these rolling Pennsylvania hills there was such a man, a shy guy named Tom with two vintage Deere tractors. He had been looking for a gal, someone who'd put up with his milking cows at 3 a.m. and his six-day work weeks. Sonya Rinker and Tom Henisee lived 57 miles apart when they both signed up for an online matchmaking service designed to link up people just like them -- farmers and others who know their way around a barn and a milking machine. Playing the dating game isn't easy in rural America: Tens of thousands of twentysomethings have moved out in recent decades, small towns have shrunk, younger farmers have become a dwindling commodity Sonya was just 24, but already worried and eager to find a mate.
Dancing at Versailles to the EU Treaty
Indeed, at Versailles they bring in a real, live, giant stamp to endorse the document. No plan B President Sarkozy had made no bones about it, and repeatedly made it clear in his election campaign that if he was president there would be no second referendum. Few politicians are open enough to say “we just can't take the risk", but I thought French Prime Minister Francois Fillion was pretty direct: “Two years ago, we rejected a text that gave the European adventure a constitutional look. That was the choice of the French people, and it had to be respected. But we cannot ignore the fact that in doing so we threw Europe, Europe that had hope in us, into surprise and confusion. “There was no Plan B, so the European Union was paralysed and the finger was pointed at us.

PAC-10 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PREVIEW
Arizona State, in particular, has been a disappointment, dropping to 6-5 with a home loss to Texas last week. It is the program's worst start since the 1998-99 season. The Sun Devils, who have had four players miss a total of 16 games, also fell out of the national rankings this week for the first time since the 2004-05 season. "We didn't get done what we wanted to get done, and we disappoint ourselves and the conference a little bit with that," Arizona State coach Charli Turner Thorne said. "We feel good about our team, but we're not satisfied. We want to get back to consistently winning game in and game out." Pac-10 teams have a combined 63-46 record in nonconference play. The .577 winning percentage is the lowest since 2001 (.542) and the conference RPI is currently No.

Moroccan-Born Mayor Dispenses Tough Love to Immigrants
The position is unlikely to represent the high-water mark of his political career: Eight out of ten citizens in the Netherlands believe that there is a place in Dutch politics for people like Marcouch. But not a few of Marcouch's fellow Moroccans in the area, which is known locally as Little Morocco, consider the mayor a turncoat. Two 11-year-old boys recently accosted him as he was walking through his community, calling him a "chaïn" -- Arabic for "traitor." Marcouch was furious. When he managed to catch one of the boys, he took hold of his chin and pulled the boy towards him, glaring at him and barking in Dutch, "sukkel" -- "loser." He refused to admonish the children for calling him a "traitor," considering it beneath him. But it didn't mean the insult didn't hurt.
