In September, the Michigan Department of Transportation officially announced its preferred option was to expand the bridge plaza within the city limits. Until this year, city officials held out hope the state agency would choose to expand the plaza in Port Huron Township. The ground-level plaza in the city would displace scores of businesses and homes and potentially cut the city in half. Construction is expected to start next year and continue until 2011. While plans for the plaza are moving forward, city officials counted a victory this year when a federal administrator refused to give MDOT permission to buy property for the bridge before detailing the project's effect on the community. City officials had protested, saying they were misled about the process and would consider a lawsuit if necessary.

India belongs to Ireland at Delhi Golf Club
McGrane took pole position after adding a 69 to his opening 67 at Delhi Golf Club to sit at the top of the pile on eight under par 136 while McDowell was two shots behind him – alongside South African Henrik Buhrmann and Frenchman Raphal Jacquelin – after all three players carded two rounds of 69. "I backed up yesterday's round with a good round today," said McGrane. "I played a lot of good shots and gave myself a lot of birdie chances. I seem to be birdieing the more difficult holes out there rather than the easier ones but really, you'd take birdies out there any time you get them." Level par to the turn and indeed level par the day through 13 holes of his second round, McGrane, who partnered World Number One Tiger Woods in both rounds over the weekend in last week's Dubai Desert Classic, made his move over an impressive closing stretch.

Friday Night Lights changed player's life
Chavez considered practicing corporate law in big cities and working at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and New York Stock Exchange. But studying Hispanic culture resolved questions raised after he played on Odessa Permian's 1988 football team, which led to the publication of Buzz Bissinger's Friday Night Lights. "When I got to Harvard University, people asked, 'What are you?' meaning what ethnicity," he said. "I would say, 'Mexican,' and they'd ask, 'Are you from Mexico?' I wanted to know who I was and studied Mexican history, art, culture and border issues. "Most meaningful was the family orientation and how close relationships are. I saw everything this country and world could offer and made the conscious decision that Odessa's where I want to be.
Boffins blast ill-informed stars
But before holding forth on their favourite remedy, celebrities should get their facts straight, experts say. The two Hollywood actresses, along with fashion designer Stella McCartney, are singled out by a charity founded to increase the public's understanding of scientific issues. Sense About Science warned: "A small group of people in the public eye promote pseudo-science without embarrassment and cannot be dissuaded from it." Kidman, Paltrow and Mini-Macca are not the only ones to raise ire. Pink has been blasted over her meddling in mulesing and a host of other stars have caused controversy by backing animal rights group PETA. Alice Tuff, who helped compile the list of celebrity pseudo-science, said: "Celebrity lifestyles and comments have a lot of social weight.
From flappers to pop princesses, Milan turns full circle
Extravagant designs and iridescent shades were omnipresent as retro styles, from the low-waisted dresses of the Roaring Twenties to the psychedelic oversized prints of the 1970s, set the runways alight. Flamboyant Italian designer Roberto Cavalli said his 2008-2009 autumn-winter collection was for young girls who rummaged through attics, junk shops and old vinyl records to seek individual style. A thumbs up from Generation Now would be his greatest compliment, he said. "I love it when a little girl of 14-15 says 'How do you do it Mr Cavalli? You make me feel like a rock star,'" he said. Flamingos served as the leitmotif on blouses and flowing organza dresses were splotched with blobs of peach, tangerine and emerald green, enlivening an already eye-popping floral backdrop.

Electronic Arts wants to use a simulated city game to promote actual learning in third-world countries. The publisher today announced that it is donating the 1989 city-building classic SimCity to the nonprofit group One Laptop per Child (OLPC). The game is currently free to play online via EA's Web site. OLPC attempts to get durable, affordable computers into the hands of underprivileged children. Stating that there are 2 billion children in the developing world, the OLPC mission statement says it is "providing a means to an end--an end that sees children in even the most remote regions of the globe being given the opportunity to tap into their own potential, to be exposed to a whole world of ideas, and to contribute to a more productive and saner world community." "By gifting SimCity onto each OLPC laptop, EA is providing users with an entertaining way to engage with computers as well as help develop decision-making skills while honing creativity," the company said.
