Grading The TV Networks: It's Report Card Time

It's been a solid couple of years for ABC in terms of ratings, critical opinion and popular buzz. Two very significant events for the network were the emergence of "Dancing with the Stars" as a true powerhouse and the resuscitation of the Thursday night lineup.

"Dancing" originally found success as a summer series in 2005, but it wasn't until 2006 when it truly became a dynamo. Both weekly installments of the celebrity spectacle absolutely dominate the competition and also provide an ample lead-in for newly launching shows or struggling critical darlings. In many ways, "Dancing with the Stars" is ABC's answer to "American Idol."

Moving "Grey's Anatomy" from its successful Sunday night timeslot to Thursday's was risky. In the end, the risk paid dividends as "Grey's" more than held its own against "CSI." Along with "Ugly Betty," ABC has accomplished the inconceivable and posed a legitimate challenge to CBS' long untested dominance of the night.

Speeding up love at first site

If a match is found, you get an e-mail with a very brief physical description of your date, and a suggested location chosen from a standing list of bars and coffee shops. Once you accept, there's no going back.

I had never tried online dating, with the exception of a few quasi-dates way back in the age of Friendster.

On the other hand, I have been on plenty of blind dates before. To ease the pressure, I follow this advice: Treat your date like an interview for a job you don't want. With that in mind I usually enjoy myself.

Michelle Kinsey: Mellencamp is in, but what about the Beastie Boys?

That means this year's nominees had to crank out their first single no later than 1982.

John Cougar released his self-titled debut in 1979, which included I Need A Lover.

But the reasons why Mellencamp should be in the Hall go way beyond the hits. He has become an ambassador for the "Heartland" as one of the founders of Farm Aid. And he continues to speak out -- whether you like it or not -- on important issues. That rocks.

So, who else is eligible for induction this year? The other nominee's include Afrika Bambaataa, Beastie Boys, Chic, Leonard Cohen, The Dave Clark Five, Madonna, Donna Summer and The Ventures.

I would love to see the Boys get in. And Madonna seems like a given.

But unless M lets the induction out of the bag like Mellencamp, we'll just have to wait until next week to find out.

The bride wore kumquat orange

Regina Polsky and Jerry Witts met seven years ago at a jewelry shop in St. Petersburg. Jerry is fond of antique watches and would bring them in to be fixed. Regina worked at the shop and, as Jerry says, as soon as she smiled at him, he knew this was it.

They started dating and then moved in together. Both are in their 50s and had been married before. But, somehow, after decades of the highs and lows of relationships, neither were burned out on the idea of finding a permanent love.

"I knew deep down in my heart that I would meet someone special," Regina said, and when met with skeptical looks that she never went through the "I'm done with relationships phase," she said it again.

"You can't give up on that. You just can't."

Regina and Jerry have that tanned, healthy look of people who have worked hard their entire lives and now can relax a bit and enjoy life.

Romance 101

Playing hard to get is a tradition as old as dating itself. However, it's not an honest way to approach trying to date someone new.

Playing hard to get merely disguises your true desires and intentions. It can also get frustrating for whomever you are trying to flirt with. Some people may find it interesting and alluring for a short period of time, but it gets old quickly. Sooner rather than later, they might just get fed up.

People most often justify and encourage playing hard to get by saying that no one is interested in dating a person who is waiting for them like a lost puppy dog. So, they reason, they need to feign an extremely busy schedule to imply that they have a lot of things going on in their life, and possibly even imply that many other people are interested in them.

Kosovo celebrates Independence Day

I think now it is time for Northern Ireland, the Basque region in Spain, Chechnya, Southern Turkey etc. to declare independence and break away. This only proves that the West has double standards and that they bring their hypocrisy and impose it on others with an iron fist calling it “democracy". Kosovo's independence is nothing but a tragic example of political demagogy and mass-media brainwashing, a dangerous precedent that will be used in the future by other terrorists to justify their murderous acts.

All the Dirt that’s Fit to Print

Once again those intrepid investigative reporters at The New York Times are hard at work. This morning's above-the-fold, front-page expose: How much marijuana did Barack Obama really smoke in high school and college? Apparently, not enough.

After snooping around for classmates of Obama in high school and college, The Times seems concerned that the presidential candidate does not seem to have been as stoned out 30 years ago as readers of his book, Dreams from My Father, might have thought.

How's that for a hard-hitting revelation?

Writes The Times Serge Kovaleski: "Mr. Obama's account of his younger self and drugs … significantly differs from the recollections of others. That could suggest he was so private about his (drug) use that few people were aware of it, that the memories of those who knew him decades ago are fuzzy or rosier out of a desire to protect him, or that he added some writerly touches in his memoir to make the challenges he overcame seem more dramatic."

Of course, it also could suggest that Mr.

Northwestern president: Earmarks help higher education

In this year's State of the Union address, President George W. Bush came out strongly against congressional earmarks and vowed to cut their number in half.

"The people's trust in their government is undermined by congressional earmarks, special interest projects that are often snuck in at the last minute, without discussion or debate," Bush said.

Earmarks can also be a valuable source of funding for higher education - which is why University President Henry Bienen had a different take on the situation, saying he did not consider earmarks for university spending wasteful.

"He didn't seem to come out against them when he had a Republican Congress," Bienen said. "Now it's a Democratic Congress, so he's been fighting the earmark battle."

Software Mac OS X Hits Record Marketshare, Continues to Chip at ...

Linux also showed modest gains, up from 0.63% to 0.67% between December 2007 and January 2008. Part of this may be due to the popularity of cheap Linux driven PCs, such as the Eee PC and the Everex CloudBook which is available online from Wal-Mart (although Eee PC will soon be available with a stripped-down version of Windows XP). For the study, Net Applications used metrics collected from 40,000 partner websites to yield a large sample group and a relatively accurate picture of the current OS market. Windows still remains a strong leader in the OS market, but Linux providers and Apple can both take a measure of pride in that they're slowly chipping away a bit at the foundation of Microsoft's success. Of course that all could change with the next operating system, particularly if it's better received than Windows Vista.

But there is another equally important cause: the simple fact that young black men commit a disproportionate number of crimes, especially violent crimes, which cannot be attributed to judicial bias, racism or economic hardships. The rate at which blacks commit homicides is seven times that of whites.

Why is this? Several incidents serendipitously occurring at around the same time as the march on Jena hint loudly at a possible answer.

In New York City, the tabloids published sensational details of the bias suit brought by a black former executive for the Knicks, Anucha Browne Sanders, who claims that she was frequently called a "bitch" and a "ho" by the Knicks coach and president, Isiah Thomas. In a video deposition, Thomas said that while it is always wrong for a white man to verbally abuse a black woman in such terms, it was "not as much ...

JAMES BROWN – A HIP-HOP DEDICATION.

I can't believe it has been a year since James Brown passed away. On December 22 history was made as Bootsy Collins hosted a James Brown Tribute Concert in Covington, KY. Bootsy lined up comic Michael Coylar, Chuck D, Afrika Bambaatta, Lil Boosie, James Browns most recent back up band the Soul General, the JB's, Mr. Browns MC Danny Ray, The Funky Drummers, Phunkbase, and Buckethead. The venue was very small and cramped, and the scene was not hollywood at all. Jeremy told me that Bootsy is from Cincinnati and held the event in town because King Records, where Mr. Brown recorded most of his music was in Cincinnati. Shout out to all that went.

Suddenly, I want to be older…being young isn't so cool to me right now.
