Lutherans and learning

With preparations signed, sealed and delivered, students at Immanuel Lutheran School in Twin Falls and Clover Trinity Lutheran School west of Filer are more than ready to begin their annual celebration of National Lutheran Schools Week. The yearly event is part of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod's recognition of Christian-based involvement in schooling dating back to the mid-1830s.This year, some 2,569 schools nationwide have set aside the week of March 3-7 to honor their long-established commitment to education. With the community in mind, daily themes are aimed at incorporating joy with learning as the two area schools set into motion their separate, week-long agendas, packed with activities. Both kickoff ceremonies are scheduled to begin Monday morning at regular school hours. And at Immanuel Lutheran, 6-year-old Trajan Holtzen is ready.Day one is "Bring your favorite stuffed animal to school day." WCC NEWS: Service celebrates WCC's 60th anniversary

Gathered in a church dating from the 12th century, the World Council of Churches seemed like a relative youngster as it celebrated its 60th anniversary Sunday 17 February.

But His All Holiness Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, reminded the near-capacity congregation at Geneva's St. Pierre Cathedral that the WCC has accomplished much in its six decades.

"The Council has provided an ideal platform where churches with different outlooks and belonging to a great variety of theological and ecclesiological traditions have been able to engage in dialogue and promote Christian unity, while all the time responding to the manifold needs of contemporary society", the Orthodox leader said, speaking in French.

He acknowledged the challenges and "turbulent" periods in the Council's life, but said that dialogue resulted from those difficulties and has paved the way forward.

As Berean Academy faces yet more tragedy it teaches us about hope

Whether you are a praying person or not, keeping the Berean Academy community in your thoughts is important during this second term of the 2007-08 school year.

The school again has been faced with the kind of adversity schools would rather not face.

Once again, the school is dealing with the death of students. It’s coming on the heels of another community loss and, God willing, bringing to an end a set of challenges dating back to May.

Throughout the last year, the school has been teaching that being a Christian doesn’t automatically mean nothing bad will happen. But being a Christian can provide the inner strength to deal with tragedy when it strikes.

Nowhere is that more apparent than Berean Academy in Elbing.

The Christian school has seen tragedy during the last year and displayed the inner strength needed to deal with it as it comes.

Utsavam at the Horniman Museum hits the right notes

Say "Indian music" to most people in Britain and they think of Ravi Shankar and his sitar, the beat of bhangra or Bollywood pop. But there is far, far more to it than that. Its heritage goes back many centuries and its variety befits a country with an unparalleled ethnic and religious mix.

On Saturday, the Horniman Museum, in southeast London, opens a nine-month exhibition, Utsavam: Music from India. With more than 300 instruments from all parts of India, it will be the largest-ever such show. Its patron is Nitin Sawhney, our own home-grown Indian music master, and there is support from the London-based band Asian Dub Foundation, whose music has breathed fresh life into the sounds of the subcontinent.

To bring the instruments to life, there will be videos and sound recordings collected during five years of field trips undertaken in cooperation with the British Library’s sound archive by the co-curators, Margaret Birley and Rolf Killius.

The power behind the plays

He is, of course, and his work does. But that’s not what this is all about -- what are we, aesthetes? No, Wilson is at the top because he’s a rare artist who exercises cultural clout on a national scale, and that power has a vigorous impact on Pittsburgh

Clinton doesn't vow to go on beyond March 4

You know, we have strong support from our families and our friends. I just hope that we'll be able to say the same thing about the American people, and that's what this election should be about."

The crowd came to its feet and applauded.

While several commentators heard something of a surrender, in the post-debate spin, her campaign sought to frame it as proving the case for her candidacy, even sending out a video of it. "What we saw in the final moments in that debate is why Hillary Clinton is the next President of the United States," spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a statement. "Her strength, her life experience, her compassion. She's tested and ready. It was the moment she retook the reins of this race and showed women and men why she is the best choice."

Unbridgeable: The ethnic divide in Kosovo

Personally, I am glad my country (Greece) has NOT recognized Kosovo as an Independent state. When America lets Palestine be recognized as a free and democratic state, i will recognize Kosova as free too. Whats good for the goose, is not good for the gander? Like someone else said in their post, what does America have to gain by doing this? It always has to do with their self interest. Military bases, anyone? I can't wait for this Bush bozo to leave office. We can only hope Obama will win before we see WW III in our lifetimes.
