| Martine McCutcheon's grateful death
Martine is now starring in new soap 'Echo Beach' and is pleased she's teaming up once again with producer Tony Jordan, the man behind some of her most famous 'EastEnders' storylines. She is quoted by Britain's Soaplife magazine as saying: "The show;s executive producer Tony Jordan wanted me to do it and I'm really thankful for the chance. Tony wrote all the good stuff when I was playing Tiffany. We have this professional love affair with each other." .
UPDATE: Heath Ledger's death might be drug related
The drugs could turn out not to be Heath Ledger's. From what I hear they're probably his. No one will know for 10 days until a more thorough autopsy is complete. But it gives eerie resonance to Jack Nicholson's cryptic remark last night of "I warned him." UPDATE: The NYPD is saying there was no visible residue on the rolled-up $20 bill, according to the AP. .
Wesley Snipes owed taxes on $38 million (That’s a lot of cheddar)
White men can't jump. Yet, blacks, even muti-millionaire half-actors, don;t pay 'they' taxes. Interesting. 'Ain't no mawfuckin' body gon' tell Wesley Snipe how he live. Wesley Snipes! I'm an actor! I was in Blade; I was a vampire that killed other vampires. Yeah! It's really a movie.. I'm not lying! Kris Kristofferson was in Blade too. Kris Kristofferson! You know, he was in Pee-Wee's Big Top Adventure. He was the guy that ran the circus? He was married to a fairy. He's a musician or some bullshit in real life! You really don't know who I am? Goddamn.. Fo'real, I'm an actor.' .
Border Wall Slashes Through Texas’ Soul
On a Saturday afternoon, I ride my bike through the streets of downtown Brownsville, Texas. I pass old brick storefronts on both sides with boarded second stories and wrought iron balconies, tributes to a city that boomed in the late 19th century. Between streets that bear the names of U.S. presidents - Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe - is a crumbling cemetery with gravestones dating far back into Brownsville's past. The concrete walls are worn to expose rusted rebar, but the cemetery is aflutter with eye-catching fabric flowers, bright as the day they were dyed.I pass through Washington Park and smile, knowing that it will be packed in a few weeks with musicians and fans, that tejano, grupero and mariachi will wail at a three-day party, Charro Days - the South Texas equivalent of Mardis Gras or Carnival.

Malone: DirecTV Is (Almost) a Done Deal
Cable pioneer and billionaire media investor John Malone could soon be back in the business of delivering TV signals to U.S. consumers—this time via satellite. Malone, who helped usher in the cable-TV era and now runs Liberty Media (LCAPA), is haggling with regulators to win approval for Liberty's late 2006 acquisition of a controlling stake in the biggest U.S. satellite operator, DirecTV Group (DTV). Malone, in an exclusive interview with BusinessWeek, says he expects the Federal Communications Commission and Justice Dept. to approve the deal soon. He's crafting a vision for using DirecTV to take on the cable-TV industry, using partnerships with telecom carriers and possibly an alliance with EchoStar (SATS), the No. 2 satellite-TV provider. Once regulators sign off, DirecTV can "take on cable television as their strongest U.S.
The Culture Warriors
Another local approaches Moroccan-American Fouad Lghzaoui, the team's cultural analyst. He tells Lghzaoui in furtive Arabic that he has seen an insurgent planting a roadside bomb, but he doesn't want to be branded an informant. Lghzaoui arranges for him to speak with U.S. soldiers, then instructs the soldiers to publicly toss the man out by the collar after loudly threatening to arrest him. "It will help protect him," he says. The Army began training social science recruits for Iraq this year, christening the teams with a classic military appellation—human terrain system. The name may not be an attention-grabber, but the mission has been: The teams act as advisers to brigades, mapping the relationships (human terrain in military parlance) of the power players and the local people.

Penguins Notebook: Lannon, Stone called up to fill in on road trip
Rather than head for a three-game trip to Florida, Tampa Bay and Atlanta with the minimum 20 healthy players, the Penguins yesterday recalled defenseman Ryan Lannon and forward Ryan Stone from their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton minor-league club. "I think they just wanted a couple extra bodies," said Stone, who had seven goals and 19 points in 34 games with the Baby Penguins playing mostly left wing. "Whatever it is, it's a good chance to see what it's like and, hopefully, get in a couple games." Lannon, who had two goals, nine points and a plus-minus rating of plus-6 for Wilkes-Barre, is a defensive defenseman. "He's a stay-at-home player, physical, tough to beat one-on-one," Penguins coach Michel Therrien said. That makes four Ryans on the roster, along with defenseman Ryan Whitney and winger Ryan Malone.

If you were watching the Canadiens' 5-2 win over Washington last night, chances are your attention was about evenly divided between the Habs and the kid wearing No. 8 for the Capitals: the incomparable Alexander Ovechkin. And chances are, more than a few of you closed your eyes and dreamed the dream: Ovechkin wearing the CH. .
Chadian rebels seize large parts of Ndjamena
Saturday, a relative calm had returned to Ndjamena, with only sporadic gunfire heard, but the situation remained tense around the president's residence. "The forces of the president tried to push the rebels to the east of the city and take back some territory in the city centre," a military source in Ndjamena said. Chadian rebel spokesman Abakar Tollimi said there were plans to attack the presidential residence on Saturday night. "We suppose that Deby is inside. If he wants to leave we have no problem," Tollimi told AFP by satellite telephone earlier Saturday. "We control the situation, we control the city, there are some pockets of resistance." Tollimi said government troops were surrounding the presidential palace and using heavy weapons against the rebels, who French military sources said numbered about 2,000 armed with machine-guns, assault rifles and rocket launchers.
