| 1800 extra soldiers, but not one good reason
We might agree, though, that in a conflict claiming civilian lives, and in which young people are expected to risk death on the taxpayers' behalf, all concerned are entitled to a few facts. Britain, of all the old imperial countries, understands what wars in Afghanistan can mean. I could tell you, meanwhile, what I believe the "special relationship" between this country and the US has become - colonialism reversed; a historical first - but the time for honesty is past due, surely. What are we doing? Why are we doing it? Or, more to the point, why can't they, or won't they, answer those questions in plain language? I suspect Afghanistan is already a debacle. Oxfam and Germany's Defence Minister do not appear to differ from that opinion. But still, 1800 trained and (if you believe it) eager individuals from a very small country are about to be sent halfway around the world to kill and be killed for purposes about which we can still, in honesty, only speculate.
Father Ryan students spend Ash Wednesday in day of service
Jay said that at first it seemed strange to be called a missionary. "We aren't going to Haiti or anything like that," the Bellevue resident said. "But we are going to show people we care about them." Jim McIntyre, president of Father Ryan, says the project, now in its second year, was inspired by students. Last year's student council came up with the idea, he said, and this year's council wanted to follow their example. Students had to apply for a limited number of volunteer slots, McIntyre said. McIntyre said that the project fit with the school's motto: "A tradition of faith, knowledge, and service." "We live in a world that tells kids to think only of themselves," he said. "At Father Ryan we are being countercultural by teaching them how to serve others first." Students share faith During the school year, students take part in a theology class that focuses on how faith should shape student's actions, Matthew said.
Was Diana's Death a Smokescreen?
An insider at the Tory party's Central Office tipped off a Labor Party Member of Parliament, Doug Hoyle, about the mystery donation. It turned out that the Tory MP in question was Tim Smith. Smith had been an MP for Beaconsfield since 1982 when he defeated a little-known Labor candidate named Tony Blair. Smith was forced to step down in 1997 after he, along with fellow Tory MP Neil Hamilton were accused of accepting payments in return for asking certain questions in the House of Commons in 1994, a scandal known as the "cash for questions" affair. In July 1997, a month prior to Diana's death in Paris, a parliamentary report authored by senior civil servant Sir Gordon Downey cleared lobbyist Ian Green, Smith, and Hamilton of the original allegations that Greer had paid the two MPs to ask questions.
Hudgens beats Howard to online glory
Forget climate change and politics the three most important things on the minds of Australians are Facebook, YouTube and Summer Heights High. And users of Google Australia care more for Disney-star-turned-nude photo-luminary Vanessa Hudgens than they do about their outgoing prime minister. The internet search giant today released its end-of-year list of the most searched-for terms, revealing among other things that New South Wales cares most about charities, Victoria about beaches and Western Australia about cheap hotels. .
Battle Lines Are Drawn at The Los Angeles Times
It's not about his age (the ridiculous AARP comment), but rather about whether he has been a leader in promoting the integration of print and online. And Stanton does not have anywhere near the journalistic gravitasse needed to lead one of the largest metro dailies in the country (if he can't command the respect of most of the staff, he will fail, and that would be disastrous for the Times.) Hiller and Zell need to spend more time and look outside the paper and select someone who has distinguished themselves as a journalist but who is also engaged in new media thinking and is committed to transforming the journalistic model into something that will serve the public good while also being economically viable. .
Porn Schoolie cruise claim investigated
POLICE say there is no evidence an adult entertainment maker is planning boat cruises for schoolies, plying them with alcohol and expecting to film nudity. It has been alleged that footage of schoolies exposing themselves would be used for Girls Gone Wild DVDs. Police looking into the matter say have found no evidence of any planned illegal activities. Sydney company Zeal Entertainment has bought the Australian rights to Girls Gone Wild, a US franchise that films drunken girls and sells the footage on DVD, it was reported today. Zeal owner Ryan Bowman was quoted as saying he plans to set up a stall on the Gold Coast to recruit schoolies for a $70 cruise. The cruise will go to a secret island north of Surfers Paradise, where participants will be served alcohol and stay for a few hours before a pub crawl back on the mainland.
Hip-Hop Rumors: LaLa Plumps Up, Amerie Dropped? AHHmerican Gangster!
Somebody hit me with this as an explanation as to the title of Mariah's new CD, E=MC2. “Just to clarify your Mariah E=MC2 comment it has nothing to do with Eminem. E stands for Emancipation(as in the title of her last album) MC is self explanatory and the 2 or squared simply means part 2. Emancipation of Mariah 2 but doesn't E=MC2 sound alot better." Ddot the King hit me with that. Charlamagne from Wendy Williams said this: “Come on illseed! Mariah's album title is E for Emancipation the MC for Mariah Carey and the 2 represents the Sequel - Emancipation Part 2." LMAO! I didn't really think that the E meant Eminem, but it's more interesting that way.
See: Just like TV, except longer
As our first examples, how about the popular and rivaling sci-fi epics, Star Trek and Star Wars. At last count, the two series are neck and neck at 11 movies in total, although the Force is not so strong with George Lucas here, as this includes several non-theatrical releases such as two Ewok movies and Droids animated TV series that were reedited into two full-length videos. Still, the six that make up the cinematic releases make the Star Wars franchise the No. 3 highest grossing series of all time and given that half, and arguably the better half was released between 1977-83, its probably sold more tickets than the five Harry Potter movies. The voyages of the Starship Enterprise, on the other hand, span 11 full theatrical releases, from William Shatners Captain Kirk, to Patrick Stewarts Jean-Luc Picard and on to an entirely new cast that will star in this years upcoming prequel which will chronicles the early days of the Spock-Kirk story.
Can Google conquer video?
In-stream video advertising may never be the same after Google gets done with it. Known for populating the web with countless text ads, Google has taken its AdSense program to the video screen, announcing that it will begin selling ads that appear inside videos on any site in its publisher network that serves more than one million video streams per month. Google, which began testing the pilot program back in May, announced the news on its AdSense blog. The program features InVideo ads -- a format Google developed on YouTube -- and text overlay ads that are contextually targeted based on signals that appear both in the video and on the page. While Google has limited the number of participants, a who's who of the web video world has already jumped on board.
